North Lakhimpur Law College the only Legal Educational Institution in the North Bank of the Bramaputra in Upper Assam including adjacent Arunachal Pradesh was founded in the year 1972. This Institution was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Sharat Chandra Singha amidst a large and enthusiastic gathering of North East Assam.
This institution was a crying need for this vast and backward bordering region for the students who come off agriculture based poor family to obtain legal education. Some of the poor families of this region produce some talented boys and girls but are not capable to send them out for legal education. Hence, to cater the need of the local people this institution is most necessary.
In view of the above circumstances some conscious people of the society with strong desire proposed to establish a legal institution to fulfill the public demand, among them some prominent lawyers Late. E. A. Hazarika, Lt. P. K. Baruah, Late Lekhan Lahan, Late Barga Ram Deori and Late H. N. Hazarika constituted a legal education committee, Lt. PK. Baruah and Lt. E. A. Hazarika hold the post of the President and the Secretary respectively and accordingly on 22nd July, 1972 the college was founded by this committee. Lt. E. A. Hazarika was appointed as the principal by the committee and since then he has been serving as the Principal of this institution till his death on 26/10/2004.
Although established in 1972 and run for long 34 years its development to reach the full status of a legal institution remains a back-log for want of funds. But the college never asked for any donation from any source for its fund. The authority maintains this institution smoothly with a meager fund which is collected from students as tuition fees, etc. The college authority possesses a building in the heart of the N.L. Town including a campus measuring two bighas of land. Besides the Govt. of Assam has allotted a plot of land measuring 30 bighas at Chukulibaria about 2 kms. away from the town where the college authority propose to construct a building for the college.
With a view to meet the ever increasing demand of public in general and students in particular, the college has assured to make this legal institution uplift. The college has the necessary infrastructure having library facilities for both lecturers and students with computer and internet facility. The college also fulfills all requirements of the University and Bar council of India.
The subjects taught in the college is 29 in all including practical papers. Exams are conducted by Dibrugarh University. The Dibrugarh University has granted a law examination center in the college campus to conduct examinations and accordingly the college is conducting examinations.
The curricular of law degree is same all over India. Hence, every legal institution is compelled to teach the similar subjects prescribed by the Bar Council of India. Now students can come to study in this institution without hesitation as this institution is affiliated to the Bar Council of India. Therefore, students are welcome to obtain law degree from this law college.
